Flower Power Vibes: Beating the Summer Heat with Fun Details
That time of year has rolled around when the temperature outside ranges from mid 70's to almost 100 degrees by the end of the day. It's also my personal least favorite time of year because sweating the minute you step outside just doesn't make for a very put together look.
To combat these hot Kentucky summer days I usually opt for more flowy tops with shorts or dresses. Looser tops and dresses offer some breathing room while providing an easy laid back look. I also tend to gravitate more toward long, light necklaces like this tassel one from Banana Republic rather than chunky statement necklaces for summer as a way to beat the heat. Statement necklaces can become hot and restricting in these high temps.
Since for me, summer style doesn't offer as much versatility as far as pieces to choose from, layering options, and statement accessories, I try to incorporate more color and pattern into my summer looks. This top from LOFT screams summer with bright, cheery colors and a 70's flower power pattern. It's perfect for a casual look like this, with slacks for work, or jeans and wedges for a night out. The tie back adds just enough flirty detail without going overboard and the ruffle sleeves are one of my favorite trends this year.
These shorts have been a favorite for me since I bought them last summer. My philosophy lately when buying clothes has been to go for more versatile, well-made pieces that will last a long time. Even though these pieces may cost a bit more, it's worth it when you don't have to replace them every year. These Levi's are the perfect length and fit and the wash is the perfect color. I have these in both this dark wash and a more distressed wash to allow some versatility. As a reference, I'm wearing a size 27 and usually wear a 4 or 6.
Sometimes sandals or flip flops just aren't the appropriate shoe for summer activities. In this case I usually fall back on my Keds or TOMS for a closed toe, yet breathable and very comfortable option. This bird egg blue pair is fun yet neutral enough that they go with a lot of my summer pieces.
